15 A-Level Psychology Approaches Studies for Stronger AO3
What does it mean to “use a study as AO3”?
Simply naming a study is not evaluation. A strong AO3 paragraph should:
Make a clear evaluative point.
Introduce relevant research evidence.
State the important finding.
Explain whether the evidence supports or challenges the approach.
Link back to the question.
For example:
A strength of social learning theory is that it has research support. Bandura, Ross and Ross found that children who observed an aggressive adult model subsequently behaved more aggressively towards a Bobo doll. This supports the claim that behaviour can be acquired indirectly through observation and imitation. Therefore, learning cannot be explained solely through direct reinforcement, increasing the explanatory power of social learning theory.
The final two sentences are vital. They turn knowledge of a study into AO3 analysis.
Five Must-Know Studies
These studies deserve the most attention. Students should know their basic procedure and findings, together with how they can be used in an argument.
1. Pavlov (1927): classical conditioning
What did Pavlov find?
Pavlov observed that dogs naturally salivated when food was presented. Food was an unconditioned stimulus, and salivation was an unconditioned response. Pavlov repeatedly paired food with a previously neutral stimulus, commonly described in textbooks as a bell. Eventually, the neutral stimulus became a conditioned stimulus that produced salivation as a conditioned response, even when food was absent.
How can it be used as AO3?
Pavlov provides controlled scientific evidence that behaviour can be learned through association. This supports the behaviourist view that behaviour is acquired from environmental experience.
However, the research used non-human animals. Although behaviourists argue that basic learning processes are shared across species, human behaviour is often affected by thought, language and emotion. Generalising from dogs to complex human behaviour may therefore be reductionist.
AO3 model
A strength of the behaviourist approach is that classical conditioning is supported by controlled research. Pavlov demonstrated that dogs could learn to salivate to a previously neutral stimulus after it had been repeatedly paired with food. This establishes a cause-and-effect relationship between environmental association and learned behaviour. However, because the research involved dogs, the findings may not fully explain complex human behaviour involving conscious thought.
2. Skinner (1948/1953): operant conditioning
What did Skinner find?
Skinner studied rats and pigeons in controlled chambers sometimes called Skinner boxes. An animal might receive food after pressing a lever, demonstrating positive reinforcement, or perform a behaviour to escape something unpleasant, demonstrating negative reinforcement. Punished behaviour became less likely to be repeated.
Skinner concluded that behaviour is shaped and maintained by its consequences.
How can it be used as AO3?
The controlled conditions allowed Skinner to manipulate consequences and measure their effects objectively. This gives the behaviourist approach scientific credibility.
Operant conditioning also has practical applications. Token economy programmes, behavioural modification and classroom reward systems use reinforcement to increase desirable behaviour.
The limitation is that controlled animal research may oversimplify human behaviour. People do not merely respond mechanically to rewards and punishments; expectations, beliefs and social context can influence their actions.
AO3 model
A strength of operant conditioning is its practical application. Skinner demonstrated that behaviour could be shaped by reinforcement and punishment. These principles have been used in token economy programmes and classroom behaviour management. The ability to produce useful behavioural change increases the practical value of the behaviourist approach.
3. Bandura, Ross and Ross (1961): the Bobo doll study
What did Bandura and colleagues find?
Children watched an adult model behave either aggressively or non-aggressively towards a Bobo doll. Children exposed to the aggressive model later displayed more imitative aggressive acts than those who observed the non-aggressive model. Boys showed more imitation of physical aggression, particularly after observing a male model.
The findings support the role of observation, modelling, imitation and identification in learning.
How can it be used as AO3?
The research supports social learning theory because children reproduced behaviour they had observed without being directly reinforced for acquiring it. This demonstrates that learning can occur indirectly.
However, striking a Bobo doll may not represent genuine aggression because the toy is designed to be hit and springs back upright. The study may therefore lack mundane realism, and its findings may not explain serious aggression outside the laboratory.
AO3 model
A strength of social learning theory is that it is supported by experimental evidence. Bandura, Ross and Ross found that children who observed an aggressive model later imitated many of the model’s aggressive acts. This supports the suggestion that behaviour can be acquired through observation rather than direct reinforcement. Nevertheless, hitting a Bobo doll may not reflect harmful real-world aggression, limiting the validity of the evidence.
4. Maguire et al. (2000): brain structure and experience
What did Maguire and colleagues find?
Maguire et al. used MRI scans to compare the brains of London taxi drivers with those of a control group. Taxi drivers had greater grey-matter volume in the posterior hippocampus, a region associated with spatial navigation. Hippocampal differences were also related to time spent working as a taxi driver.
How can it be used as AO3?
This research supports the biological claim that behaviour and experience are associated with physical brain structures. Objective brain scans also add scientific credibility.
However, this was a quasi-experiment and participants were not randomly allocated to become taxi drivers. The findings demonstrate a relationship but cannot establish with certainty that navigating London caused the brain differences. Pre-existing differences might have helped some people succeed as taxi drivers.
Important specification note
Under the revised course, methods of studying the brain and plasticity sit within Biopsychology. Maguire should therefore be treated as optional supporting AO3—not as a compulsory named Approaches study.
AO3 model
A strength of the biological approach is its use of objective scientific evidence. Maguire et al. used MRI scans and found structural differences in the hippocampi of London taxi drivers. This supports the view that biological structures are associated with behaviour. However, the study was correlational, so it cannot establish whether navigation caused the differences.
5. Freud (1909): Little Hans
What did Freud report?
Little Hans developed a fear of horses. Freud interpreted the phobia through the Oedipus complex, suggesting that Hans unconsciously feared his father and displaced this fear onto horses. Freud used the case as evidence for unconscious conflict, defence mechanisms and psychosexual development.
Most information was collected by Hans’s father and communicated to Freud, rather than obtained through Freud directly observing the child.
How can it be used as AO3?
The detailed case study generated rich information and appeared to support several psychodynamic concepts. It also helped establish the importance of childhood experience in later psychological development.
However, Freud’s interpretation was subjective and alternative explanations were possible. Hans may have developed his fear through classical conditioning after witnessing a horse collapse. Evidence that can be interpreted in several ways provides weak scientific support for the psychodynamic approach.
AO3 model
A weakness of the psychodynamic approach is that much of its supporting evidence is open to subjective interpretation. Freud explained Little Hans’s fear through unconscious conflict and the Oedipus complex. However, the same fear could be explained through classical conditioning after Hans witnessed a horse collapse. This means the case does not provide conclusive evidence for Freud’s explanation.
Five Should-Know Studies
Students do not need the same level of procedural detail for these studies. Learn the central finding and the particular argument it can support.
6. Watson and Rayner (1920): Little Albert
What did they find?
Watson and Rayner repeatedly paired a white rat with a sudden frightening noise. Albert subsequently showed fear towards the rat and appeared to generalise this response to other furry objects.
How can it be used as AO3?
The study supports the behaviourist claim that emotional responses can be learned through classical conditioning. It also suggests that behaviourist principles apply to humans rather than only animals.
However, it was a single case involving a very young child, so generalisation is limited. The procedure also caused distress and would not meet modern ethical standards. In addition, later historical analysis has questioned aspects of Albert’s identity and health, reducing confidence in the original interpretation.
AO3 model
A strength of the behaviourist approach is that conditioning has been demonstrated in a human participant. Watson and Rayner conditioned Little Albert to fear a white rat by pairing it with a frightening noise. This supports the environmental explanation of learned emotional responses. However, conclusions drawn from one child cannot be confidently generalised to all people.
7. Bandura, Ross and Ross (1963): live and filmed models
What did they find?
Children observed aggressive behaviour presented by a live adult, on film or through a cartoon. Children exposed to these models subsequently displayed more aggression than children in the control condition. The research suggested that behaviour could be learned from symbolic media models as well as people physically present.
How can it be used as AO3?
The findings extend social learning theory and demonstrate its ability to explain the potential influence of television, film and other media. This gives the approach real-world relevance.
However, the study still measured short-term behaviour towards a Bobo doll in an artificial setting. It cannot prove that viewing aggressive media causes enduring violence outside the laboratory.
AO3 model
A strength of social learning theory is that it can explain the possible influence of media models. Bandura and colleagues found that children imitated aggression shown by filmed and cartoon models. This supports the claim that people can learn from symbolic models without direct contact. However, the study measured immediate imitation rather than long-term real-world aggression.
8. Bartlett (1932): War of the Ghosts
What did Bartlett find?
British participants recalled a Native American folk story that contained unfamiliar ideas and structure. With repeated recall, accounts often became shorter and more conventional. Participants altered details to make the story fit their cultural expectations.
Bartlett concluded that memory is reconstructive and influenced by existing schemas.
How can it be used as AO3?
The study supports the cognitive approach because internal schemas appeared to shape recall. It demonstrates the value of making inferences about mental processes from observable behaviour.
However, Bartlett did not standardise all procedures and sometimes prompted participants. Replication is therefore difficult, reducing the reliability of the evidence.
AO3 model
A strength of the cognitive approach is that schema theory has supporting evidence. Bartlett found that participants changed an unfamiliar story so that it matched their cultural expectations. This suggests that internal schemas influence how information is processed and recalled. However, the procedure lacked standardisation, which reduces confidence in the reliability of the findings.
9. McGuffin et al. (1996): genetic influence on depression
What did they find?
McGuffin and colleagues reported higher concordance for depression among monozygotic twins than dizygotic twins, with especially high concordance for severe depression. Because identical twins share more genetic material, this pattern suggests a genetic contribution.
How can it be used as AO3?
This supports the biological approach’s assumption that inherited factors influence behaviour and mental processes.
Concordance among identical twins was not 100%, however. This suggests that genes alone cannot explain depression and that environmental factors are also important. The findings therefore support an interactionist rather than a purely biological explanation.
AO3 model
A strength of the biological approach is that genetic influences are supported by twin research. McGuffin et al. found higher concordance for depression among identical than non-identical twins. This supports a genetic contribution because identical twins share more genes. However, concordance was below 100%, showing that environmental experience must also contribute.
10. Harter et al. (1996): approval and the self
What did Harter and colleagues find?
Research by Harter and colleagues examined perceived support, approval and false-self behaviour during adolescence. Young people whose sense of worth depended heavily on approval from others were more likely to report difficulties involving self-worth and presenting a false self.
This is consistent with Rogers’ proposal that conditions of worth can produce incongruence between the self-concept and the person’s genuine experience.
How can it be used as AO3?
The findings give empirical support to a concept that might otherwise appear abstract and difficult to test. They suggest that conditional acceptance can be associated with poorer psychological adjustment.
However, much of the evidence relies on self-report and is correlational. It cannot demonstrate that conditions of worth directly caused low self-worth or false-self behaviour.
AO3 model
A strength of the humanistic approach is that there is evidence consistent with conditions of worth. Harter et al. found that adolescents whose worth depended on others’ approval were more likely to report false-self behaviour and difficulties with self-worth. This supports Rogers’ claim that conditional acceptance can contribute to incongruence. However, correlational evidence cannot establish cause and effect.
Five Could-Know Studies
These studies are best used selectively. One accurately explained piece of evidence is more valuable than several names added without analysis.
11. Tolman (1948): latent learning and cognitive maps
What did Tolman find?
Tolman studied rats navigating mazes. Rats allowed to explore without an immediate reward appeared to learn the layout and showed rapid improvement when a reward was later introduced. Tolman argued that they had formed internal cognitive maps.
How can it be used as AO3?
The findings challenge radical behaviourism because learning appeared to occur without immediate reinforcement. They suggest that internal mental representations intervene between stimulus and response.
However, the research still used rats in artificial mazes. Its relevance to complex human cognition may therefore be limited.
AO3 model
A weakness of strict behaviourism is that it may overlook internal mental processes. Tolman found that rats appeared to form cognitive maps even when their exploration was not immediately reinforced. This suggests that learning involves internal representation rather than only stimulus-response associations. Consequently, the cognitive approach may provide a fuller explanation of learning.
12. Kendler et al. (2006): heritability of major depression
What did Kendler and colleagues find?
Using data from a large Swedish twin sample, Kendler et al. concluded that major depression was moderately heritable. The estimated heritability was approximately 38%, with evidence that genetic influences were stronger in women than men.
How can it be used as AO3?
The large sample strengthens the reliability and population validity of the genetic evidence supporting the biological approach.
At the same time, an estimated heritability of 38% leaves substantial variation associated with non-genetic factors. The study therefore challenges biologically deterministic claims and supports a combined genetic-environmental explanation.
AO3 model
A strength of the biological approach is support from large-scale twin research. Kendler et al. estimated the heritability of major depression at approximately 38%. This provides evidence that genetic differences influence behaviour. However, most variation was not attributed to genetic effects, so a purely biological account is incomplete.
13. Raine et al. (1997): brain activity and violent behaviour
What did Raine and colleagues find?
Raine et al. used PET scans to compare 41 people charged with murder or manslaughter who pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity with matched controls. The groups differed in activity across several brain areas, including reduced prefrontal activity in the offender group.
How can it be used as AO3?
The research supports the biological approach by demonstrating an association between brain functioning and violent behaviour. The use of PET scanning provided objective, quantifiable evidence.
However, it was a quasi-experiment and cannot show that atypical brain activity caused violence. Medication, mental disorder, head injury and life experience could also have influenced brain functioning.
AO3 model
A strength of the biological approach is its use of objective methods. Raine et al. used PET scans and found differences in brain activity between offenders pleading not guilty by reason of insanity and matched controls. This suggests that biological functioning is associated with behaviour. Nevertheless, the quasi-experimental design prevents a firm causal conclusion.
14. Fisher and Greenberg (1996): evaluating Freud
What did they conclude?
Fisher and Greenberg reviewed research relating to several Freudian claims. They concluded that some general propositions had support, but evidence did not consistently confirm all of Freud’s specific explanations.
This is better described as a research review than as one experiment.
How can it be used as AO3?
The review can challenge the claim that every aspect of psychodynamic theory is completely unsupported. Nevertheless, partial or indirect support does not validate the entire theory, particularly its more difficult-to-test concepts.
AO3 model
A strength of the psychodynamic approach is that some of its general claims have received research support. Fisher and Greenberg’s review found evidence consistent with parts of Freud’s theory. This suggests that the approach should not be dismissed entirely. However, support for some propositions does not establish the validity of concepts such as the Oedipus complex, which remain difficult to test scientifically.
15. Elliott (2002): effectiveness of humanistic therapies
What did Elliott find?
Elliott reviewed outcome research into humanistic and experiential psychotherapies. The evidence indicated that clients generally improved following therapy and that humanistic therapies could produce outcomes comparable with other established approaches.
This is a meta-analytic research review, not a single laboratory experiment.
How can it be used as AO3?
The findings support the practical application of humanistic principles such as empathy, genuineness and unconditional positive regard. If therapies based on an approach improve clients’ wellbeing, this adds to the approach’s usefulness.
However, successful therapy does not prove that every theoretical assumption behind it is correct. Improvement may result from common therapeutic factors, including receiving attention and forming a trusting relationship.
AO3 model
A strength of the humanistic approach is its successful application to therapy. Elliott’s review found that humanistic therapies were generally effective and could achieve outcomes comparable with other therapies. This demonstrates the practical value of principles such as empathy and unconditional positive regard. However, therapeutic success does not necessarily prove that all humanistic assumptions are valid.
How many studies should students actually learn?
Students should avoid treating the list as 15 separate case studies that must all be memorised in full.
Learn Pavlov, Skinner and Bandura carefully because AQA names their research explicitly.
Know the central finding and one limitation for the remaining Must studies.
Learn one or two Should studies that strengthen weaker areas of your knowledge.
Select Could studies strategically to develop distinctive AO3 arguments.
For most essays, two or three well-developed evaluation paragraphs will be more effective than a long list of unexplained research names.
A simple AO3 sentence structure
Use the following structure when turning a study into evaluation:
A strength/weakness of [approach] is… This is supported/challenged by [researcher], who found… This matters because… Therefore…
The phrase “This matters because…” forces you to explain the significance of the evidence. That explanation is what moves the paragraph beyond description.
Final revision advice
The aim is not to memorise as many researchers as possible. The aim is to build a small and flexible evidence bank. Students who can explain precisely how a finding supports, challenges or applies an approach are far more likely to produce effective AO3 than students who simply list studies.
Start with the three named researchers, then add evidence where it improves a particular argument. That is a manageable and purposeful way to revise Approaches.
One AO3 Point, Multiple Clinical Topics: How to Use Reductionism Effectively
One of the biggest mistakes students make when revising A Level Psychology is trying to memorise a completely different evaluation paragraph for every explanation, treatment and study.
There is a better way.
Some evaluation arguments can be adapted across several areas of the specification. Reductionism is an excellent example in Clinical Psychology and Mental Health.
But there is an important warning:
Simply writing “this explanation is reductionist” is not effective AO3.
To gain credit, you need to explain what has been reduced, what has been ignored, why this matters and what effect this has on the explanation or treatment.
That's where PEEL can help.
What is reductionism?
Reductionism involves explaining a complex behaviour or disorder in terms of a much simpler component.
For example, an explanation might focus primarily on:
genes or neurotransmitters
faulty cognitions
conditioning
one particular environmental influence
This isn't automatically a weakness. Breaking complex behaviour into smaller components can make it easier to investigate scientifically.
The problem arises when an explanation becomes too simplistic and overlooks other important influences.
Mental health disorders are particularly useful for demonstrating this because biological, cognitive, behavioural and environmental factors may interact.
So how do we turn that into effective AO3?
The PEEL structure
P — Point
Identify the limitation.
“One limitation of this explanation is that it may be reductionist.”
E — Evidence/Example
Explain exactly what the explanation reduces the disorder to.
E — Explain
Identify what has potentially been overlooked and explain why that matters.
L — Link
Return directly to the question. Does this reduce the validity of the explanation? Could it affect the effectiveness of the treatment?
Let's see what this looks like across Clinical Psychology and Mental Health.
1. Biological explanations of depression
P — Point
One limitation of biological explanations of depression is that they may be biologically reductionist.
E — Evidence
Biological explanations focus on physical factors, such as genetic vulnerability and the role of neurotransmitters, when explaining why depression develops.
E — Explain
However, depression is a complex disorder and psychological and environmental experiences may also contribute. For example, negative thinking patterns or stressful life events could interact with biological vulnerability. Explaining depression mainly at a biological level may therefore overlook important influences on the disorder.
L — Link
Consequently, a purely biological account may provide an incomplete explanation of depression and therefore have limited explanatory power.
Why this works: The paragraph doesn't just label the explanation as reductionist. It explains what has been reduced and why that matters.
2. Cognitive explanations of depression
The same argument can be adapted.
P — Point
A limitation of cognitive explanations of depression is that they may be psychologically reductionist.
E — Evidence
Cognitive explanations focus heavily on maladaptive thought processes, such as negative beliefs and irrational thinking, as an explanation for depressive symptoms.
E — Explain
This may overlook biological factors such as genetic vulnerability as well as environmental influences such as stressful life events. Depression may result from several interacting factors rather than faulty cognition alone.
L — Link
Therefore, focusing primarily on cognition may provide an incomplete explanation of depression and reduce the validity of a purely cognitive account.
Notice what happened there?
Same AO3 concept. Different application.
3. CBT/REBT for depression
Reductionism can also be used when evaluating treatment.
P — Point
A potential limitation of cognitive therapies such as CBT or REBT is that they may take a reductionist approach to treating depression.
E — Evidence
These therapies primarily attempt to reduce depressive symptoms by identifying and challenging maladaptive or irrational thoughts.
E — Explain
However, not every person's depression is caused or maintained primarily by faulty cognition. Biological vulnerability and difficult social or environmental circumstances may also contribute. Changing thought patterns may therefore fail to address all of the factors maintaining the disorder.
L — Link
This means cognitive therapy may not be equally effective for every individual, particularly where non-cognitive factors make a substantial contribution to their depression.
Add a counterargument
However, focusing specifically on cognition can also be beneficial because it gives therapists a clear target for treatment and provides patients with practical strategies they can use to challenge unhelpful thinking.
This is much stronger evaluation because the argument is balanced rather than simply stating that reductionism is bad.
4. Behavioural explanations of phobias
This is one of the easiest places to adapt the point.
P — Point
A limitation of behavioural explanations of phobias is that they may be environmentally reductionist.
E — Evidence
Behavioural accounts explain phobias largely through learning processes such as classical conditioning and the maintenance of fear through operant conditioning.
E — Explain
This reduces a complex fear response primarily to learned associations and may overlook cognitive and biological influences. For example, individuals may differ in their biological preparedness to develop particular fears, while cognitive interpretations may also influence how threatening a stimulus appears.
L — Link
Therefore, conditioning may explain some phobias well but may not provide a complete explanation for why all phobias develop.
That final sentence is important.
Avoid saying:
“Therefore, the explanation is wrong.”
Reductionism usually means an explanation may be incomplete, not necessarily incorrect.
5. Systematic desensitisation
Students sometimes assume reductionism can only evaluate explanations. It can also be applied carefully to treatments.
P — Point
One limitation of systematic desensitisation is that its behavioural approach may be reductionist.
E — Evidence
The treatment focuses on reducing the learned fear response by replacing anxiety with relaxation while the individual gradually encounters the feared stimulus.
E — Explain
However, a phobia may involve more than a conditioned behavioural response. Irrational beliefs or other psychological factors could also contribute to the fear. Treating the behavioural response alone may therefore fail to address all of the processes underlying the phobia.
L — Link
Consequently, systematic desensitisation may be less suitable for individuals whose phobia involves important cognitive or other psychological factors.
Counterargument
On the other hand, targeting the behavioural response directly may be precisely why the treatment is useful. A focused treatment can provide a clear and manageable way of reducing avoidance and anxiety without requiring every possible cause of the phobia to be identified.
That is a much more sophisticated evaluation than:
“Systematic desensitisation is reductionist.”
6. Biological explanations of OCD
Here's the same technique again.
P — Point
One limitation of biological explanations of OCD is that they may be biologically reductionist.
E — Evidence
Biological accounts focus on factors such as genetic vulnerability and biological mechanisms involved in the disorder.
E — Explain
However, OCD is complex, and biological explanations may underestimate the contribution of learning, cognition and environmental experiences. It is possible that biological vulnerability interacts with these other factors rather than independently determining whether OCD develops.
L — Link
Therefore, biological factors may form an important part of the explanation without providing a complete account of OCD.
That last sentence gives the paragraph some nuance: important ≠ sufficient.
7. Drug therapy for mental disorders
This is another very reusable version.
P — Point
A limitation of drug therapy is that it can be criticised as biologically reductionist.
E — Evidence
Drug treatments primarily attempt to reduce symptoms by altering biological processes.
E — Explain
However, psychological disorders may also involve cognitive, behavioural and environmental influences. Medication may reduce symptoms without necessarily addressing the psychological or social factors that contributed to the disorder or help maintain it.
L — Link
Therefore, drug therapy alone may not provide a complete treatment for every patient, and some individuals may benefit from psychological therapy alongside medication.
Counterargument
However, reductionism can have practical value. Identifying and targeting particular biological mechanisms allows researchers to develop specific treatments that can reduce symptoms and make it easier for some patients to engage with other forms of therapy.
8. A generic PEEL paragraph students can adapt
If you're struggling to remember all of those examples, learn the logic, rather than memorising every word:
P: One limitation of ______ is that it may be reductionist.
E: It explains/treats ______ mainly in terms of ______.
E: However, this may overlook ______. As mental health disorders are complex, several biological, psychological and environmental factors may interact.
L: Therefore, ______ may provide an incomplete explanation/treatment and may not account equally well for every individual.
Then tailor the blanks to the question.
That's much more useful than memorising a generic paragraph and reproducing it regardless of the topic.
How to make the paragraph even stronger
For higher-level evaluation, add a counterargument.
Reductionism is not necessarily a weakness.
Reducing complex behaviour to simpler components can allow psychologists to:
formulate clear hypotheses
investigate individual variables under controlled conditions
identify specific mechanisms
develop targeted treatments
So your paragraph can develop into:
Reductionism → why this limits the explanation → BUT why reductionism may also be scientifically or practically useful → overall judgement.
That moves the paragraph from a basic criticism towards genuine evaluation.
Examiner tip: never stop at the label
Compare these two responses:
❌ “The biological explanation is reductionist, which is a weakness.”
versus:
✅ “The biological explanation may be reductionist because it explains the disorder primarily through biological mechanisms. This may overlook cognitive and environmental influences that could interact with biological vulnerability. Therefore, although biological factors may contribute to the disorder, they may not provide a complete explanation.”
The second response explains why the criticism matters.
That's what students should be aiming for.
One AO3 point — many opportunities
Reductionism can be an extremely useful evaluation tool in Clinical Psychology and Mental Health.
The secret isn't memorising the same paragraph and inserting it everywhere.
It's understanding the underlying argument:
What has been reduced? → What has been ignored? → Why does that matter? → What does this mean for the explanation or treatment?
Once you understand that sequence, you can adapt reductionism confidently to a range of exam questions.
And that's far more useful than trying to memorise dozens of disconnected AO3 paragraphs.
AQA Clinical Psychology and Mental Health: Must Know, Should Know and Could Know Research Studies
The new Clinical Psychology and Mental Health topic is part of Paper 1 in the updated AQA A-level Psychology specification, with first A-level assessment in 2027. Students must understand definitions of mental health and the characteristics, explanations and treatments of phobias, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
However, knowing the theories is only part of the challenge. To produce effective AO3, students also need research evidence that can support or challenge those theories and treatments.
This guide organises 13 useful pieces of research into three levels:
Must Know – the most useful evidence to learn first.
Should Know – additional research that can strengthen evaluation.
Could Know – evidence that can add depth, sophistication or a counterargument.
These categories are revision priorities rather than official AQA categories. AQA does not prescribe this list of studies. Students could use other relevant and accurately described research. The topic content itself is set out in the updated AQA specification.
It is also important to remember that Beck’s negative triad and Ellis’s ABC model are named cognitive explanations, not individual research studies. Students must learn both as AO1, but they have not been included in this research-study list.
Must Know studies
1. Watson and Rayner (1920): Little Albert
Watson and Rayner investigated whether an emotional response could be learned through classical conditioning. A young child known as Little Albert was initially unafraid of a white rat. The researchers repeatedly presented the rat alongside a frightening loud noise. Albert subsequently showed fear when the rat was presented without the noise, and his fear appeared to generalise to some other furry objects.
This study can be used to support the acquisition stage of the two-process model, because it demonstrates how a previously neutral stimulus may become associated with fear. However, it was a study of one child, the procedure was not standardised to modern research standards, and there are serious ethical concerns. It therefore provides vivid but limited evidence for explaining the development of phobias. The original study was published as Conditioned Emotional Reactions in 1920. (Watson and Rayner publication record)
Exam use: The study supports classical conditioning as a possible explanation for the acquisition of a phobia, but the case-study evidence cannot establish that all phobias develop in this way.
2. Gilroy et al. (2003): graded exposure for spider phobia
Gilroy and colleagues followed people who had received three 45-minute sessions of either live graded exposure, computer-aided vicarious exposure or progressive muscle relaxation for spider phobia. Forty-two of the original 45 participants were assessed at an average follow-up of 33 months. Improvements were found across several measures, although the interaction between treatment group and time was not statistically significant. (Gilroy et al., 2003)
The study is relevant to systematic desensitisation because live graded exposure is a central element of that treatment. However, it should not be described as a straightforward test of the complete systematic-desensitisation procedure: the live-exposure condition was compared with other interventions, and the long-term differences between groups were not clear.
Exam use: The findings suggest that exposure-based treatments can produce lasting improvements, but they do not isolate precisely which component caused the improvement.
3. March et al. (2007): CBT and fluoxetine for depression
The Treatment for Adolescents with Depression Study compared cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), the antidepressant fluoxetine, and a combination of the two. At 18 weeks, the combined treatment had an 85% response rate, compared with 69% for fluoxetine and 65% for CBT. By 36 weeks, response rates were 86% for combined treatment and 81% for each treatment used alone. (March et al., 2007)
This provides evidence that CBT is an effective treatment for depression and that combining psychological and biological treatments may produce faster improvement. The study focused on adolescents, however, so its findings cannot automatically be generalised to all adults with depression.
Exam use: March et al. support the effectiveness of CBT, particularly when it is combined with antidepressant medication.
4. Nestadt et al. (2000): a family study of OCD
Nestadt and colleagues compared 80 people with OCD and their first-degree relatives with 73 community controls and their relatives. In total, 343 relatives of the OCD group and 300 relatives of the control group were assessed using structured procedures. The researchers found familial aggregation of OCD: the disorder was more common among the first-degree relatives of people with OCD. (Nestadt et al., 2000)
This supports a genetic contribution to OCD. Nevertheless, family members share environments as well as genes, so a family study cannot by itself show that the association is entirely genetic.
Exam use: The increased risk among first-degree relatives supports a genetic explanation, but shared family experiences provide an alternative explanation.
5. Soomro et al. (2008): SSRIs for OCD
Soomro and colleagues reviewed 17 studies involving 3,097 adults with OCD. Across the studies, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) reduced OCD symptoms more effectively than placebos over six to 13 weeks. In the studies measuring clinical response, people receiving SSRIs were almost twice as likely to respond as those receiving a placebo. Adverse effects were generally more common with SSRIs, and the review could not establish their longer-term effectiveness. (Soomro et al., 2008)
The findings support the effectiveness of drug therapy for OCD and are consistent with serotonin being involved in the disorder. However, successful treatment does not necessarily prove that low serotonin caused OCD in the first place.
Exam use: SSRIs appear more effective than placebo in the short term, although side effects and uncertainty about long-term outcomes must be considered.
Should Know studies
6. Öst (1989): one-session exposure treatment
Öst reported the outcomes of an intensive one-session treatment for 20 people with specific phobias. Treatment lasted an average of 2.1 hours and combined prolonged in-vivo exposure with modelling. At a follow-up averaging four years, 90% of the participants were described as much improved or completely recovered. (Öst, 1989)
This is often used as evidence for the effectiveness of intensive exposure or flooding. It is important to describe it accurately: the treatment combined exposure with modelling, so the results cannot be attributed to flooding alone. The series also had only 20 patients and did not use a randomised control group.
Exam use: The study suggests that intensive exposure can be rapid and long-lasting, but the mixed treatment and limited design make it difficult to establish cause and effect.
7. David et al. (2008): psychological therapy and medication for depression
David and colleagues randomly allocated 170 outpatients with major depressive disorder to 14 weeks of rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT), cognitive therapy or fluoxetine. Immediately after treatment, there were no significant differences between the three conditions. At the six-month follow-up, REBT showed a significantly larger effect than medication on one measure, while the advantage for cognitive therapy was not statistically significant. (David et al., 2008)
The study supports the view that psychological therapies can be at least as effective as medication and may have lasting benefits. However, it would be inaccurate to claim simply that CBT was definitively superior to medication in every analysis.
Exam use: Psychological and drug treatments produced similar immediate outcomes, with some evidence of a longer-term advantage for REBT.
8. Lewis (1936): family patterns in obsessional illness
Lewis’s early clinical work, Problems of Obsessional Illness, described patterns within families of people experiencing obsessional symptoms. It is often used as early support for the claim that OCD runs in families. (Lewis, 1936)
The evidence has historical value, but diagnostic criteria, research methods and standards of reporting have changed considerably since 1936. It should therefore be used cautiously and alongside more systematic evidence such as Nestadt et al.
Exam use: Lewis provides early support for familial transmission, but the age and limited methodological detail of the evidence reduce the strength of any genetic conclusion.
9. Menzies et al. (2007): neural evidence for OCD
Menzies and colleagues reviewed neuroimaging and neuropsychological research into OCD and also conducted a quantitative meta-analysis of functional MRI findings. They reported consistent abnormalities involving orbitofronto-striatal circuits, while noting that findings across studies were not entirely consistent and that other brain areas may also be involved. (Menzies et al., 2007)
This supports a neural explanation of OCD, particularly the involvement of the orbitofrontal cortex and connected circuits. However, brain-imaging evidence is usually correlational. Neural differences could contribute to OCD, result from the disorder, or reflect another variable.
Exam use: The review supports orbitofronto-striatal involvement but does not prove that neural abnormalities cause OCD.
Could Know studies
10. Choy et al. (2007): review of treatments for specific phobias
Choy, Fyer and Lipsitz reviewed research published between 1960 and 2005 on treatments for specific phobias, including in-vivo exposure, virtual-reality treatment and cognitive therapy. The review concluded that exposure-based approaches had the strongest evidence base. (Choy et al., 2007)
This strengthens the argument that behavioural treatments can be effective. Because it was a review of different studies, treatments and phobia types, variation between the included research makes a single simple conclusion more difficult.
Exam use: The wider evidence base supports exposure treatments, although effectiveness may vary according to the procedure and the type of phobia.
11. Cuijpers et al. (2013): meta-analysis of CBT for depression
Cuijpers and colleagues combined 115 studies of CBT for adult depression. CBT produced a substantial overall effect, but the estimated effect became smaller when publication bias was taken into account. Higher-quality studies also reported smaller effects than lower-quality studies. (Cuijpers et al., 2013)
This provides both support and a useful counterargument. CBT is effective, but its benefits may have been exaggerated if unsuccessful or less impressive studies were less likely to be published.
Exam use: The large evidence base supports CBT, while evidence of publication bias encourages a more cautious conclusion about the size of its effect.
12. Taylor (2013): candidate genes for OCD
Taylor conducted a meta-analysis of genetic-association research into OCD. The review identified 230 polymorphisms across 113 studies and found associations with several serotonin-related and other genetic variants. Most individual associations were small, supporting the view that OCD is polygenic rather than being caused by one particular gene. (Taylor, 2013)
The findings strengthen the genetic explanation while also showing why searches for a single “OCD gene” are unlikely to succeed. The modest and sometimes inconsistent associations suggest that genes probably interact with one another and with environmental influences.
Exam use: Taylor supports a polygenic explanation in which several genes each make a small contribution to vulnerability.
13. Cromer et al. (2007): traumatic life events and OCD
Cromer, Schmidt and Murphy studied 265 people diagnosed with OCD. Fifty-four per cent reported at least one traumatic life event, and experiencing one or more such events was associated with more severe OCD symptoms, even after several relevant variables were controlled. (Cromer et al., 2007)
This challenges a purely biological account by showing that environmental experiences are associated with the severity of OCD. The study was correlational, however, so it cannot establish that trauma caused the OCD symptoms. Recall of past events may also have been affected by participants’ current symptoms.
Exam use: The findings support a diathesis-stress account in which biological vulnerability may interact with traumatic or stressful experiences.
How many studies should an AQA Psychology student learn?
Students do not need to memorise every detail of all 13 studies. A more effective approach is to learn a small number very securely and then add further evidence when the core material is confident.
For each study, aim to remember:
Who conducted it and when.
What the researchers did.
The key finding.
Which explanation or treatment it supports or challenges.
One limitation or alternative interpretation.
A study should never be dropped into an essay without explanation. The student must make the link back to the question clear. For example:
Research support for drug therapy comes from Soomro et al. (2008), who found that SSRIs reduced OCD symptoms more effectively than placebos. This suggests that SSRIs are an effective treatment. However, treatment effectiveness does not demonstrate that low serotonin originally caused OCD, so the evidence supports the therapy more directly than the biological explanation.
That final sentence is what turns remembered research into developed AO3.
Final revision advice
Start with the five Must Know studies and practise applying each one to an exam question. Once those are secure, use the Should Know and Could Know evidence to introduce greater range, methodological analysis and counterarguments.
Above all, prioritise accurate explanation over the number of researchers named. One well-developed and correctly linked study is more valuable than several names listed without analysis.
AQA A-Level Psychology Attachment Studies: Must Know, Should Know and Could Know
One of the hardest parts of revising Attachment is deciding how many studies you actually need to learn. Textbooks contain a large number of names, dates and findings, but trying to memorise every study in equal detail is rarely an effective use of revision time.
A better strategy is to organise the research into three levels:
Must Know: studies named directly in the AQA specification or central to a major theory.
Should Know: strong research evidence that can develop evaluation and support a well-constructed AO3 paragraph.
Could Know: additional studies that can add depth, originality or a counterargument when used selectively.
This guide is aligned with the updated AQA A-level Psychology specification for first A-level assessment in 2027. The specification names Lorenz, Harlow, Ainsworth, van IJzendoorn and the English and Romanian Adoptees project. It also requires Bowlby’s maternal deprivation theory, making his 44 Thieves investigation important supporting research.
Students do not need to include every study in every essay. A study earns marks only when it is accurate, relevant and clearly linked to the question.
Must Know Attachment studies
Lorenz (1935): imprinting in goslings
Lorenz investigated imprinting, an innate form of attachment seen in some bird species. He divided a clutch of greylag goose eggs into two groups. One group hatched naturally with the mother goose, while the other hatched in an incubator where Lorenz was the first moving object they encountered.
The naturally hatched goslings followed their mother. The incubator group followed Lorenz. When the two groups were placed together, the goslings continued to follow the figure on which they had originally imprinted.
Lorenz concluded that imprinting is an innate process that takes place during a brief critical period after hatching. He also observed that early imprinting could influence later courtship and sexual behaviour.
How to use it: Lorenz provides AO1 knowledge for animal studies of attachment. It can also support the idea that attachment has an innate, biological basis. However, students should be cautious when generalising from birds to human attachment, which is far more emotionally and cognitively complex.
Harlow (1959): contact comfort
Harlow separated infant rhesus monkeys from their biological mothers and gave them two artificial surrogate mothers. One was constructed from wire and supplied milk. The other was covered in soft cloth but did not necessarily provide food.
The monkeys spent considerably more time clinging to the cloth mother, including when the wire mother supplied milk. When frightened, they sought comfort from the cloth surrogate and used it as a secure base from which to explore.
Harlow concluded that contact comfort was more important than feeding in the formation of attachment. Monkeys deprived of normal maternal care later experienced serious social and reproductive difficulties, although the severity depended partly on the length of isolation.
How to use it: Harlow challenges learning theory because attachment did not form simply through the association between the caregiver and food. The study also demonstrates the long-term importance of early emotional care. Its ethical costs were extremely high, and generalisation from rhesus monkeys to humans must still be made carefully.
Ainsworth et al. (1978): the Strange Situation
Ainsworth developed the Strange Situation as a controlled observation of infant–caregiver attachment. Infants experienced a series of episodes involving play, the arrival of a stranger, separation from the caregiver and reunion.
Researchers recorded four main behaviours:
separation anxiety
stranger anxiety
reunion behaviour
willingness to explore and use the caregiver as a secure base.
Three attachment classifications were identified. Securely attached infants explored confidently, became distressed by separation and were easily comforted at reunion. Insecure-avoidant infants showed little visible distress and tended to avoid contact at reunion. Insecure-resistant infants showed intense distress but resisted comfort when the caregiver returned.
How to use it: Ainsworth is essential AO1 for the Strange Situation and attachment types. The procedure was highly standardised and has shown good inter-rater reliability. However, behaviour in the Strange Situation may reflect cultural child-rearing practices or an infant’s temperament rather than attachment security alone.
Van IJzendoorn and Kroonenberg (1988): cultural variations
Van IJzendoorn and Kroonenberg conducted a meta-analysis of 32 Strange Situation samples from eight countries, involving nearly 2,000 infants.
Secure attachment was the most common classification in every country, suggesting a degree of universality. Insecure-avoidant attachment was relatively more common in some Western European samples, whereas insecure-resistant attachment was more frequent in samples from Israel and Japan.
The most important finding was that variation within cultures was approximately one-and-a-half times greater than variation between cultures. A single national average can therefore conceal major differences between regions and social groups.
How to use it: The overall dominance of secure attachment supports Bowlby’s claim that attachment has a universal biological function. However, the variations question whether the Strange Situation measures attachment in exactly the same way in every culture. The meta-analysis also combined studies with different samples and procedures, which may reduce the validity of simple cultural comparisons.
Bowlby (1944): the 44 Thieves study
Bowlby studied 44 children who had been referred to a child guidance clinic for stealing and compared them with a control group of emotionally disturbed children who had not been referred for theft. He interviewed the children and their families, while a social worker conducted separate assessments.
Fourteen of the thieves were described as affectionless psychopaths, meaning that they showed little affection, guilt or concern for other people. Twelve of these 14 children had experienced prolonged separation from their mothers during the first two years of life.
Bowlby concluded that prolonged early separation could prevent the development of a normal attachment and contribute to later emotional difficulties and delinquency.
How to use it: The findings support Bowlby’s maternal deprivation theory. However, the research was correlational, so separation cannot be shown to have caused later difficulties. Other factors, such as family conflict or disruption, may have contributed to both the separation and the child’s later behaviour. Bowlby also carried out the interviews and developed the theory, increasing the possibility of researcher bias.
Rutter and the English and Romanian Adoptees project
The English and Romanian Adoptees project followed Romanian children adopted by British families after experiencing severe institutional deprivation. Their development was compared with British adoptees who had not experienced Romanian institutional care.
At adoption, many Romanian children showed substantial physical and cognitive delay. Children adopted before approximately six months generally made very strong recoveries. Children adopted later were more likely to show persistent difficulties, including cognitive impairment, disinhibited attachment and quasi-autistic characteristics.
Disinhibited attachment involves unusually friendly, attention-seeking behaviour towards unfamiliar adults and a lack of appropriate selectivity in attachment behaviour.
How to use it: The research demonstrates that institutionalisation can have serious long-term effects but also shows that recovery is possible. The better outcomes among children adopted very early suggest a sensitive period rather than an absolute, irreversible critical period. Because the children were not randomly assigned to deprivation, individual differences and pre-institutional experiences cannot be completely controlled. Nevertheless, studying adoptees reduced the likelihood that later outcomes were simply caused by continuing hardship.
Should Know Attachment studies
Takahashi (1990): the Strange Situation in Japan
Takahashi used the Strange Situation with 60 middle-class Japanese infants and their mothers. Secure attachment remained the most common classification, but no infants were classified as insecure-avoidant and a comparatively high proportion were classified as insecure-resistant. The procedure was ended early for some infants because their separation distress became extremely intense.
Japanese infants were rarely separated from their mothers in everyday life, so the separation episodes may have been unusually stressful. Their behaviour may therefore have reflected unfamiliarity with separation rather than insecure attachment.
How to use it: Takahashi questions the imposed etic of applying a procedure developed in the United States to another culture without considering different child-rearing practices. It is effective AO3 for the cultural validity of the Strange Situation.
Grossmann and Grossmann: attachment in Germany
Grossmann and colleagues found relatively high levels of insecure-avoidant attachment in a German sample. One explanation is that traditional German child-rearing practices placed greater value on independence and discouraged clingy behaviour.
An infant who appears avoidant in the Strange Situation may therefore be displaying culturally encouraged independence rather than an insecure relationship.
How to use it: This study further challenges the cultural validity of Ainsworth’s classifications. It shows why behaviour should be interpreted within its cultural context rather than judged automatically against an American standard.
Simonella et al. (2014): attachment patterns can change
Simonella and colleagues assessed 76 Italian infants using the Strange Situation. Secure attachment remained the largest category, but the proportion was lower than in earlier Italian research, while insecure-avoidant attachment was more common.
The researchers suggested that social changes, including longer working hours and increased use of professional childcare, might have influenced attachment behaviour.
How to use it: Simonella shows that a culture is not fixed. Attachment distributions may change across generations as working patterns, childcare and family life change. This is useful when evaluating cultural research that treats an entire country as if it has one permanent style of parenting.
Zeanah et al. (2005): attachment in Romanian institutions
Zeanah and colleagues assessed 95 Romanian children aged between 12 and 31 months who had spent most of their lives in institutional care. They were compared with 50 children who had never lived in an institution. Attachment was assessed using the Strange Situation, alongside carers’ reports of social behaviour.
Only a small minority of the institutionalised children were securely attached, compared with a clear majority of the control group. Many institutionalised children displayed disinhibited attachment towards unfamiliar adults.
How to use it: Zeanah provides strong supporting evidence for the negative effects of institutionalisation. However, it is difficult to identify which aspect of institutional care caused the difficulties because deprivation may include poor nutrition, low stimulation and frequent changes of caregiver.
Bailey et al. (2007): intergenerational attachment
Bailey and colleagues studied 99 mothers and their babies. The mothers’ attachment to their own primary attachment figures was assessed, and the babies’ attachment was measured using the Strange Situation.
Mothers who reported poor attachment relationships with their own mothers were more likely to have babies who were also classified as insecurely attached.
How to use it: The association supports Bowlby’s internal working model: early attachment may create expectations that influence later caregiving and relationships. However, the evidence is correlational. Genetic temperament or shared environmental conditions could contribute to continuity across generations.
Schaffer and Emerson (1964): multiple attachments
Schaffer and Emerson followed 60 babies from working-class families in Glasgow. Mothers were interviewed regularly about separation protest and stranger anxiety. Although many babies first formed one main attachment, most went on to form several attachments.
The strongest attachments were associated more closely with sensitive responsiveness than with the amount of time spent with the infant or responsibility for physical care.
How to use it: The stages of attachment are no longer named in the updated 2027 specification. However, the study can still be used selectively to question an overly rigid interpretation of monotropy and to show the importance of responsive interaction. Students should not spend revision time learning the discontinued stages as core content.
Could Know Attachment studies
Guiton et al. (1966): can imprinting be reversed?
Guiton found that chicks exposed to distinctive rubber gloves during an early period later directed courtship behaviour towards the gloves. However, after spending time with members of their own species, their preferences became more typical.
How to use it: Guiton qualifies Lorenz’s conclusion by suggesting that the effects of imprinting are not always completely permanent. This makes an effective counterargument in an evaluation paragraph about critical periods.
Suomi and Harlow (1972): therapist monkeys
Socially deprived monkeys were placed with younger, normally socialised monkeys. The younger animals were less threatening and encouraged interaction. Over time, the deprived monkeys developed more typical social behaviour.
How to use it: The study suggests that some effects of early deprivation can be reduced through later positive social experiences. It challenges a deterministic conclusion that early deprivation inevitably produces permanent damage, although recovery depended on the severity and duration of deprivation.
Koluchová (1972–1976): the Czech twins
Koluchová reported the case of twin boys who had experienced extreme isolation and mistreatment during early childhood. After being placed in a stable, loving environment, their intellectual, linguistic, social and emotional development improved considerably.
How to use it: The twins demonstrate that substantial recovery can occur after severe early deprivation. However, a case study of two genetically related children cannot establish how typical such recovery would be, and their exact early experiences were difficult to reconstruct.
Le Mare and Audet (2006): physical recovery after adoption
Le Mare and Audet followed Romanian children adopted into Canadian families. The adoptees showed substantial physical catch-up after leaving institutional care, although some developmental difficulties remained.
How to use it: The research supports the view that an improved environment can produce considerable recovery while also showing that recovery may be incomplete. It provides a useful comparison with Rutter’s findings.
Kagan et al. (1978): the temperament hypothesis
Kagan proposed that some behaviours used to classify attachment may arise from an infant’s biologically influenced temperament. A naturally anxious or highly reactive baby may show intense distress in the Strange Situation, whereas a calmer baby may appear less affected by separation.
How to use it: The temperament hypothesis challenges the assumption that attachment type is caused entirely by caregiver sensitivity. However, later evidence suggests that attachment and temperament are related but distinct: an infant’s behaviour results from an interaction between their characteristics and the caregiver’s response.
Fox et al. (2017): the value of early foster care
Research from the Bucharest Early Intervention Project compared children who remained in institutional care with children placed in high-quality foster care. Those moved into family care generally showed better developmental outcomes, with earlier placement associated with greater benefits.
How to use it: Fox and colleagues provide practical evidence that early intervention can improve outcomes following institutionalisation. The study also supports the idea of a sensitive period: development remains open to change, but earlier supportive care tends to produce better recovery.
How should students revise these studies?
Do not try to memorise every detail on the first attempt. Use the three levels strategically.
For each Must Know study, learn:
the aim or research question
the essential procedure
one or two key findings
the conclusion
at least one strength or limitation.
For each Should Know study, learn the finding and exactly which theory, method or conclusion it supports or challenges.
For the Could Know studies, select two or three that you can use confidently. One well-explained study is worth more than several names added without development.
An effective research paragraph should follow this sequence:
Point → Evidence → Explain → Link back to the question
For example:
One limitation of the Strange Situation is that it may be culturally biased. Takahashi found no insecure-avoidant infants in a Japanese sample but a relatively high proportion of insecure-resistant infants. Japanese infants were rarely separated from their mothers, so the procedure may have produced unusually intense distress. Therefore, the Strange Situation may measure culturally unfamiliar separation rather than attachment insecurity, reducing the validity of comparisons between cultures.
The study is not included merely to show knowledge. Every sentence explains why the evidence matters.
Final revision advice
Begin with Lorenz, Harlow, Ainsworth, van IJzendoorn, Bowlby and the English and Romanian Adoptees project. Once those studies are secure, add evidence that strengthens your evaluation. You do not need an enormous collection of names; you need a carefully selected collection that you can apply accurately.
That is the difference between simply remembering a study and using research effectively in an AQA Psychology answer.

AQA A Level Psychology (2027 Specification)
One of the most common questions I hear from students is:
"There are so many studies in Memory. Which ones do I actually need to revise?"
It's a great question. Many students spend hours trying to memorise every piece of research they come across, but successful revision isn't about knowing more studies—it's about knowing the right studies and understanding how to use them in your exam answers.
As an AQA Psychology examiner, I encourage my students to prioritise their revision. I've divided the key Memory studies into three categories:
✅ Must Know – essential studies every student should know.
⭐ Should Know – studies that strengthen your evaluation and understanding.
💡 Could Know – additional research that can help students aiming for the highest grades demonstrate wider psychological knowledge.
✅ Must Know Studies
These studies form the backbone of the Memory topic. You should know the aim, procedure, findings, conclusions and how each study can be used in an exam answer.
1. K.F. – Shallice and Warrington
Aim
To investigate the effects of brain damage on different types of memory.
Procedure
K.F. suffered brain damage following a motorcycle accident. Researchers assessed his performance on a variety of memory tasks to identify which aspects of memory had been affected.
Findings
K.F. had a severely impaired short-term memory but a relatively intact long-term memory. He could remember events from before his accident and was able to form some new long-term memories despite his poor short-term memory.
Researchers also found that his visual short-term memory was much better than his verbal short-term memory.
Why is it important?
The findings challenged the original Multi-Store Model.
Rather than supporting the idea that information must always pass through a single short-term memory store before entering long-term memory, K.F.'s case suggested:
STM and LTM are separate memory systems.
Short-term memory is more complex than originally proposed.
Different components of STM may exist.
These findings helped pave the way for the Working Memory Model.
Examiner's Tip
Students often write:
"K.F. supports the Multi-Store Model."
A stronger answer would be:
"K.F. provides evidence that STM and LTM are separate stores but also suggests that STM consists of different components, which challenges the simplicity of the Multi-Store Model."
2. Godden and Baddeley (1975)
Aim
To investigate whether recall is improved when learning and retrieval occur in the same environment.
Procedure
Deep-sea divers learned lists of words either underwater or on land.
Later, they recalled the words either in the same environment or in the opposite environment.
Findings
Participants recalled significantly more words when the learning and recall environments matched.
For example:
Underwater → Underwater = better recall
Land → Land = better recall
Why is it important?
The study provides strong evidence for context-dependent forgetting.
Environmental cues present during learning become associated with the memory and help trigger recall later.
This supports the explanation of retrieval failure, which suggests forgetting often occurs because appropriate retrieval cues are absent rather than because memories have disappeared.
Examiner's Tip
This study is excellent evidence for retrieval failure but remember to evaluate it.
Learning lists of unrelated words while scuba diving is not particularly representative of everyday learning, so ecological validity may be limited.
3. Loftus and Palmer (1974)
Aim
To investigate whether leading questions influence eyewitness testimony.
Procedure
Participants watched films of road traffic accidents before answering questions about what they had seen.
The critical question asked:
"How fast were the cars going when they smashed, collided, bumped, hit or contacted each other?"
In a second experiment, participants were later asked whether they had seen broken glass.
Findings
Participants who heard stronger verbs estimated significantly higher speeds.
Those hearing the word 'smashed' were also much more likely to report seeing broken glass, even though none was present.
Why is it important?
The study demonstrates that memory is reconstructive rather than a perfect recording of events.
Information introduced after an event can alter the original memory.
This has important implications for police interviewing techniques and courtroom evidence.
Examiner's Tip
Don't just remember the speed estimates.
Many exam questions reward students who also mention the broken glass findings, as they provide stronger evidence that memories can actually become distorted.
4. Johnson and Scott (1976)
Aim
To investigate whether anxiety affects the accuracy of eyewitness testimony.
Procedure
Participants believed they were waiting to take part in another experiment.
One group overheard a calm conversation before seeing a man leave carrying a pen covered in grease.
The second group overheard an argument followed by breaking glass before seeing a man leave carrying a bloodstained letter opener.
Participants were later asked to identify the man from a set of photographs.
Findings
Participants in the low-anxiety condition correctly identified the man far more often than those who witnessed the threatening situation.
Why is it important?
The findings support the weapon focus effect.
High levels of anxiety appear to narrow attention onto the source of danger, reducing memory for peripheral details such as the offender's appearance.
Examiner's Tip
This study is often paired with Yuille and Cutshall, who found the opposite effect in a real-life shooting.
Being able to compare these findings produces stronger AO3 evaluation.
⭐ Should Know Studies
These studies strengthen your understanding of memory and provide useful supporting evidence when evaluating explanations and models.
Baddeley (1966)
Baddeley investigated how information is coded in short-term and long-term memory.
He found that short-term memory mainly uses acoustic coding, whereas long-term memory relies more on semantic coding.
Why learn it?
It provides strong evidence for the different characteristics of STM and LTM and supports the Multi-Store Model.
Miller (1956)
Miller proposed that short-term memory has a capacity of approximately 7 ± 2 items.
Although more recent research suggests the capacity may be lower, Miller's research remains one of the most influential studies in memory.
Why learn it?
It supports the limited capacity of STM and frequently appears alongside the features of the Multi-Store Model.
Peterson and Peterson (1959)
Participants memorised trigrams before counting backwards to prevent rehearsal.
Recall fell rapidly after around 18 seconds.
Why learn it?
Provides evidence that STM has a very limited duration unless information is actively rehearsed.
Bahrick et al. (1975)
Participants recognised former classmates from high-school yearbooks many years after leaving school.
Recognition remained remarkably accurate, even after several decades.
Why learn it?
Provides strong evidence that long-term memory can last for many years and may even be permanent.
💡 Could Know Studies
These studies extend your knowledge and are particularly useful for students aiming for the highest grades.
Squire (2009)
Squire reviewed evidence from neuropsychological research and brain imaging.
His work highlighted the crucial role of the hippocampus and medial temporal lobe in forming new declarative long-term memories.
Why learn it?
It provides biological support for theories of long-term memory and creates useful links between Memory and Biopsychology.
Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
They proposed the Working Memory Model, replacing the idea of a single STM with multiple interacting components:
Central Executive
Phonological Loop
Visuo-Spatial Sketchpad
(Later) Episodic Buffer
Why learn it?
This model explains everyday tasks such as reading, reasoning and multitasking much better than the Multi-Store Model.
Sutherland and Hayne (2001)
Their research demonstrated that retrieval is more successful when the context at recall matches the context during learning.
Why learn it?
It provides further support for context-dependent retrieval and strengthens evaluation of retrieval failure.
Köhnken et al. (1999)
This review examined the effectiveness of the Cognitive Interview.
The researchers concluded that the Cognitive Interview consistently increases the amount of correct information recalled without producing a large increase in inaccurate details.
Why learn it?
It provides excellent AO3 evidence when evaluating the Cognitive Interview.
How Should You Revise These Studies?
Rather than trying to memorise every detail equally, prioritise your revision.
If you're aiming for a C grade
Focus on the Must Know studies.
Learn:
Aim
Procedure
Findings
Conclusion
If you're aiming for a B grade
Know the Must Know studies plus the Should Know studies so you can strengthen your AO3 evaluation.
If you're aiming for an A or A*
Use the Could Know studies selectively to demonstrate wider psychological knowledge where they genuinely add to your answer.
Remember, quality is far more important than quantity.
Final Examiner Advice
One of the biggest mistakes students make is trying to include as many studies as possible.
Examiners aren't awarding marks for long lists of research.
They're looking for accurate, relevant knowledge that answers the question.
If you know your Must Know studies thoroughly, support your answers with the Should Know studies, and occasionally bring in a Could Know study where appropriate, you'll be in an excellent position to achieve high marks.

The Biggest Mistake A Level Psychology Students Make in Obedience Questions (And How to Avoid It)
Many students know Milgram's research, but still lose marks in the exam. Discover the most common mistake, understand the difference between explanation and evaluation, and learn how an examiner approaches obedience questions.
If you're studying A Level Psychology, there's one topic that many students find difficult: obedience.
After more than 25 years of teaching Psychology and working as an AQA examiner, I've noticed the same pattern year after year. Students often know Milgram's study in great detail, yet still fail to achieve the marks they deserve.
The reason usually isn't a lack of knowledge. It's because they don't know how to use that knowledge effectively in the exam.
Mistake 1: Writing Everything You Know About Milgram
Many students believe that the more they write about Milgram's original experiment, the better their answer will be.
Unfortunately, that isn't how A Level Psychology is assessed.
Examiners reward students who answer the specific question that has been asked. A concise, well-focused answer that directly addresses the question will always score more highly than pages of irrelevant detail.
Before you begin writing, ask yourself:
What is this question actually asking me to explain or evaluate?
Mistake 2: Confusing Explanation with Evaluation
This is probably the biggest mistake I see as an examiner.
Many students think they are evaluating when they are actually explaining.
For example, a student might write:
"Participants were less likely to obey when they were closer to the learner because they felt more responsible for the consequences of their actions."
This is a good explanation of why obedience fell, but it is not evaluation. It demonstrates knowledge of the theory.
Evaluation goes one step further. It asks whether the evidence is convincing, whether there are limitations, or what the findings tell us about obedience.
For example:
"Although proximity reduced obedience from 65% to 40%, a substantial proportion of participants still administered the maximum 450-volt shock. This suggests that proximity alone cannot explain obedience and that other situational factors, such as the legitimacy of the authority figure, also influence whether people obey."
Notice the difference. Rather than simply explaining the findings, this paragraph considers what they mean.
The Three Situational Variables Every Student Must Know
Milgram investigated several situational variables that influenced obedience. These appear regularly in short-answer, application and essay questions.
Proximity
When the teacher and learner were placed in the same room, obedience fell from 65% to 40%. Although this reduction was substantial, many participants still obeyed to the maximum 450-volt shock. This suggests that being physically closer to the victim increases feelings of personal responsibility, making obedience less likely, but it does not eliminate obedience altogether.
Location
When Milgram moved the experiment from the prestigious surroundings of Yale University to a run-down office building, obedience fell to 47.5%. This suggests that people are more likely to obey when authority is associated with a respected institution, increasing its perceived legitimacy.
Uniform
When the experimenter was replaced by an ordinary member of the public rather than someone wearing a laboratory coat, obedience dropped to 20%. This demonstrates the powerful influence of symbols of legitimate authority on obedient behaviour.
Looking for the Pattern
One of the best ways to impress an examiner is to look beyond individual findings and identify the overall pattern.
Although proximity, location and uniform all reduced obedience, none of these situational variables eliminated obedience completely. Many participants still obeyed to the maximum 450-volt shock.
However, two of Milgram's variations produced a striking result.
When participants were allowed to choose the shock level themselves, none administered the maximum 450-volt shock. Likewise, when two experimenters gave conflicting instructions, obedience to the maximum shock also fell to 0%.
What do these two variations have in common?
In both cases, participants could no longer simply follow the instructions of a clear, legitimate authority figure. They had to make their own decision, or they were faced with conflicting commands. As a result, they could no longer displace responsibility onto the experimenter.
This pattern provides strong support for Milgram's agentic state explanation. People are most likely to obey when they perceive that responsibility lies with a legitimate authority figure. When personal responsibility increases, or when authority becomes unclear, obedience is much less likely.
Examiner's Tip
One of the easiest ways to improve your marks is to ask yourself one simple question every time you write an evaluation point:
"So what?"
What does this evidence actually tell us?
Does it support the explanation?
Does it challenge it?
Does it suggest the explanation only works under certain conditions?
Adding just one sentence that explains the significance of the evidence can often move an answer into a higher mark band.
Remember:
AO1 explains what happened and why.
AO3 judges the quality, importance or implications of the evidence.
Knowing the difference between these assessment objectives is one of the fastest ways to improve your exam performance.
Try This Exam Question
A manager in a large company instructs an employee to work unpaid overtime. Although the employee believes this is unfair, they agree because the manager is wearing company uniform and is known to hold a senior position.
Using your knowledge of situational variables affecting obedience, explain the employee's behaviour. (8 marks)
Before writing your answer, underline the clues in the scenario.
In this example, the references to the manager's uniform and senior position should immediately make you think about legitimate authority and the situational variables that influence obedience.
The strongest answers don't simply describe Milgram's research—they apply it directly to the scenario.
Final Thoughts
Success in A Level Psychology isn't about memorising more information than everyone else.
It's about understanding how psychological research fits together, applying evidence to unfamiliar scenarios and knowing when the examiner expects explanation rather than evaluation.

Different Types of Validity (AQA A-Level Psychology 2027)
What is validity?
Validity refers to whether a test, measure or investigation measures what it is intended to measure.
Face validity
Definition
Face validity is the extent to which a questionnaire, test or measure appears (on the face of it) to be measuring what it claims to measure.
Example
A psychologist develops a questionnaire to measure social anxiety. A panel of experienced psychologists reviews the questions and agrees that they appear to measure social anxiety. The questionnaire therefore has good face validity.
How is it assessed?
By asking experts or members of the target population whether the measure appears to assess the intended behaviour.
How can it be improved?
Pilot the questionnaire.
Ask experts to review the items.
Rewrite or remove ambiguous questions.
Concurrent validity
Definition
Concurrent validity is the extent to which a psychological measure relates to an existing similar measure. It is assessed by comparing a new measure with one that has already been shown to be valid.
Example
A psychologist develops a new questionnaire measuring depression. Participants complete both the new questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). If participants obtain similar scores on both measures, the new questionnaire has good concurrent validity.
How is it assessed?
Compare participants' scores on the new measure with scores on an established, validated measure.
How can it be improved?
Compare the new measure with a recognised validated test.
Ensure both tests measure the same psychological construct.
Ecological validity
Definition
Ecological validity is a form of external validity that focuses on the extent to which research findings can be generalised to other settings or everyday life.
Example
Milgram's obedience study has been criticised for having low ecological validity because administering what participants believed were electric shocks in a laboratory does not reflect behaviour in everyday life.
How can it be improved?
Use tasks that are more representative of everyday behaviour.
Conduct research in natural settings where appropriate.
(I would avoid saying simply "carry out the study in a natural setting." The current AQA guidance emphasises that ecological validity is mainly about how realistic the task is, not just where it takes place.)
Temporal validity
Definition
Temporal validity is a form of external validity that focuses on the ability to generalise findings beyond the particular historical context of the study.
Examples
Asch's (1951) conformity study may have lower temporal validity because social attitudes and levels of conformity may have changed since the 1950s.
Research investigating attitudes towards mental illness conducted several decades ago may also have lower temporal validity because public understanding and acceptance of mental illness have changed over time.
How can it be improved?
Replicate studies with contemporary participants.
Repeat research at different points in time to determine whether the findings remain applicable.
Does Your First Attachment Shape Your Adult Relationships?
When we think about our relationships as adults, we often focus on our current experiences. But psychologists have long asked a fascinating question:
Can the bond we form with our first caregiver influence the relationships we have later in life?
According to attachment theory, the answer may be yes—but it's more complex than many people realise.
What is attachment?
Attachment is the emotional bond that develops between an infant and their primary caregiver. According to psychologist John Bowlby, this early relationship provides children with security, comfort and protection during the most important stages of development.
Bowlby believed that these first experiences create an Internal Working Model—a mental blueprint that helps us understand ourselves, other people and relationships.
If a child experiences a secure attachment, they may grow up believing that others are trustworthy and that they themselves are worthy of love. In contrast, inconsistent or insecure attachments may make later relationships more challenging.
The research
One of the best-known studies into adult relationships was carried out by psychologists Hazan and Shaver.
They placed a questionnaire, known as the "Love Quiz," in an American newspaper and asked adults about both their childhood attachment experiences and their romantic relationships.
The researchers found that adults who reported secure childhood attachments were more likely to have happy, trusting and long-lasting romantic relationships. Those who reported insecure attachments were more likely to experience jealousy, fear of intimacy or difficulties maintaining relationships.
These findings appeared to support Bowlby's idea that early attachment can influence later relationships.
Is childhood destiny?
Not necessarily.
Although early experiences are important, psychologists now recognise that people continue to develop throughout their lives.
Positive friendships, supportive partners, therapy, education and other life experiences can all influence the way we see ourselves and other people. Research has shown that attachment patterns are not fixed and can change over time.
This is encouraging because it reminds us that our past does not have to determine our future.
What does this mean for psychology students?
If you're studying AQA A Level Psychology, this debate is central to the Attachment topic.
When evaluating Bowlby's theory, it's important to consider both sides:
Research supports the idea that early attachment can influence adult relationships.
However, later experiences also play an important role, suggesting that attachment is not entirely fixed or deterministic.
Strong exam answers explain both perspectives before reaching a balanced conclusion.
Final thoughts
Our earliest relationships may leave a lasting impression, but they do not define who we become.
Psychology shows us that people are capable of growth, resilience and change throughout life. Understanding attachment theory helps us appreciate both the importance of childhood and the remarkable ability of human beings to adapt.

Why Students Know the Content But Still Underperform in A-Level Psychology Exams
The Frustrating Reality
Many students come away from a mock exam feeling shocked.
They revised the content, completed flashcards and spent hours reading their notes. Yet the grade on the paper doesn't reflect the effort they put in.
As an AQA Psychology examiner and tutor, I see this regularly. The issue is often not a lack of knowledge. Instead, students struggle to demonstrate that knowledge in the way examiners expect.
Common Problem 1: Not Answering the Question
Many students write everything they know about a topic without focusing on the command word or the specific requirements of the question.
For example, a student may explain Milgram's obedience study perfectly but fail to discuss what the question is actually asking.
Examiners reward relevant knowledge, not everything a student knows.
Common Problem 2: Weak Application Skills
Application questions require students to use psychological knowledge to explain a scenario.
Many students identify the correct theory but fail to link it directly to the details provided in the stem.
This is one of the biggest reasons students lose marks.
Common Problem 3: Generic Evaluation
Evaluation often separates A-grade students from lower grades.
Strong students develop evaluation points, explain why they matter and link them back to the question. Weaker students tend to list evaluation points without explanation.
Common Problem 4: Poor Exam Timing
Even highly capable students can lose marks by spending too long on shorter questions.
A good understanding of timing allows students to maximise marks across the whole paper.
How Students Improve
The most successful students spend less time passively revising and more time:
Practising exam questions
Improving application skills
Developing evaluation
Learning examiner expectations
Receiving detailed feedback
Final Thoughts
Success in A-Level Psychology requires more than knowledge alone. Students need to understand how to apply, analyse and evaluate psychological theories under exam conditions.
With the right strategies, significant improvement is possible in a relatively short period of time.

How to Answer A02 Questions in A-Level and GCSE Psychology (Without Losing Easy Marks)
If you are studying A-Level Psychology, you have probably heard your teacher say:
“You need to apply it to the scenario.”
And yet, many strong students still lose marks on A02.
Not because they don’t understand the theory.
But because they don’t apply it precisely.
In this guide, I’ll show you exactly what examiners are looking for — and how to structure your A02 answers so you stop dropping easy marks.
What Is A02?
In A-Level Psychology (AQA and most other boards), assessment is divided into:
AO1 – Knowledge and understanding
AO2 – Application of knowledge to a scenario
AO3 – Evaluation
AO2 is where you must take psychological theory and apply it directly to the context given in the question.
This usually appears as:
A short scenario about an individual
A workplace situation
A case study
A description of behaviour
And you are asked to explain it using psychological concepts.
What Examiners Are Actually Looking For
A02 is not about repeating the scenario.
It is about:
Selecting relevant psychological knowledge
Linking it directly to the details in the scenario
Explaining how the theory accounts for what is happening
Examiners reward:
Clear psychological terminology
Direct reference to the scenario
Explicit explanation of how the theory fits
They do not reward vague comments such as:
“This shows attachment issues.”
That is description. Not application.
The 3-Step A02 Formula
Here is the structure I teach my students:
1. Identify
State the relevant concept or theory clearly.
2. Apply
Link it directly to the specific details in the scenario.
3. Explain
Explain how the concept accounts for the behaviour or situation described.
Example
Imagine a question about a child who becomes extremely distressed when separated from their mother.
Weak Answer
“This child has separation anxiety which is part of attachment.”
Why this loses marks:
Minimal terminology
No development
Very little explicit linking
Stronger Answer
“The child’s distress when the mother leaves suggests separation anxiety, which is one of Ainsworth’s attachment behaviours. This indicates that the child may have formed a strong attachment to the mother.”
Better — but still underdeveloped.
Top Band Style Answer
“The child’s intense distress when separated from the mother suggests separation anxiety, a key attachment behaviour identified by Ainsworth. This indicates the child has formed a strong emotional bond with the caregiver. According to attachment theory, securely attached children use their caregiver as a secure base, so separation triggers anxiety due to the temporary loss of that source of safety.”
Why this works:
Clear terminology
Direct scenario reference
Explicit explanation
Developed understanding
That is what earns full A02 marks.
Common A02 Mistakes
Even high-achieving students lose marks because they:
Retell the scenario instead of analysing it
Write pure AO1 with no reference to context
Use vague language (“This links to behaviourism”)
Fail to explain how the theory accounts for the behaviour
Application must always be specific and explained.
How to Practise A02 Effectively
To improve your A02:
Highlight key trigger words in the scenario
Ask yourself: Which theory explains this behaviour?
Write short Identify–Apply–Explain paragraphs
Compare your answer against mark scheme language
Most importantly, practise writing — not just reading.
Final Thoughts
A02 is often where grades are won or lost.
Many students understand the content.
Fewer know how to apply it precisely under exam conditions.
If you can master structured application, your marks will rise quickly — especially on 4-, 6- and 8-mark questions.
And that can be the difference between a B and an A…
or an A and an A*.

Why Studying Little and Often Works: Psychology Tips for A-Level and GCSE students
Many students feel pressure to study for long periods of time.
Psychology research shows that this is not the most effective way to learn.
Studying a little and often helps the brain remember information more successfully.
Memory: How the Brain Stores Information
In psychology, memory is often described as short-term memory and long-term memory.
When students study a lot in one session, information often stays in short-term memory. This means it is easily forgotten.
When learning is spaced over time, the brain has more chances to:
repeat information
strengthen memory
move knowledge into long-term memory
This method is called distributed practice, and it improves exam recall and understanding.
Cognitive Load: Learning Without Overwhelm
